Accreditation and Next Steps

1. From what I can read, you can apply under Section 25B of the UGC Act of 1978 - they seem to have given accreditation to credible institutes - we should talk to the orgs below and put together an application proposal.

This is the accreditation committee - Prof. PW thinks this is doable (also need to get land and buildings he says )- and we know Prof. Deepthi Bandara - who is an ag biologist scientist  I think from peradeniya

I know her from long back when I was on the UoP staff but she probably knows Prof. PW.

2. We may need to reconsider the legal elements - e.g. SLINTEC created a separate entity but with the same brand - there is some language about transferring properties and governance structures in the Act.

3.  FECT could  focus on mphils in the Env and Climate and related areas but we need to work on the public image and demonstrating our depth.

So many though think that they own the word environment - so that may be a bottleneck.

4. We may need a plan for expanding physically - it shall be close to Kandy - but some land or place shall be needed. Probably need to lease at the start.

5. We shall need to develop our web-presence - e.g. wikipedia, google scholar, webometrics

6. We need to work on some links with other innovative Universities at the grad level such as
Bard NY - and then build linkages in the region e.g.  Andulas Indonesia

7. We need to get support from private sector - am sure we can get LTL, Dilmah, MAS and a few other orgs to back us at the outset - after we get the thing of the ground.

8. We need to get support from Academics in SL and expats  - not going to be difficult, we have all the contacts.

9. We do need to work on our publications particularly books - and getting these out in reputed outlets.

So we have many things lined up now - in terms of people to get the OK - higher ed ministry, sustainable dev ministry, partners overseas, partners locally - that may be the reason to pursue accreditation in a few months while keeping this a long-term project.

What we shall need to do is take some steps - have coordinators, collect intelligence, develop a plan, SWOT analysis.

Prof. Wickramagamage on Viability of Setting up a Higher Educaiton Institute

It is doable but you need a huge investment.  Otherwise it will be like a tutory, many such things are in Sri Lanka.               The basic requirements are the land, buildings, laboratories and other infrastructure.  Man power is not a problem in Kandy Area.  You can also think about a different model from what is generally available at State Universities and the private tutories.  A more problem oriented and multi-disciplinary postgraduate degrees should be the focus.  It is also necessary.   Sine a new such institution has a recognition problem, teaming up with a foreign institution might be a good idea.  The market is already crowded with many suspicious institutions, you have to be able to offer a more credible option to the students, local as well as foreign.
